In Person Film Photography Workshop with James Richard
If you’re looking to level up your film photography, this is a hands on afternoon of shooting together in Canterbury, followed by an online critique of the work you make.
I love film, probably a bit too much if you ask my wife, and I genuinely love talking about it with anyone who’s curious. Whether you’re brand new to film or you’re already shooting it and want to get more consistent results, I’d love to spend the afternoon shooting with you and getting into the nitty gritty of how I approach film.
What It Is
An afternoon workshop where we grab a coffee, answer all your film questions, figure out where you’re struggling, and you can pick my brains. Then we’ll shoot together in and around Canterbury. Once your film is developed and scanned, we’ll jump on a call and go through your images with a proper critique and troubleshooting session.
What’s Included
Two parts, one experience:
A coffee on me, plus a film chat and the chance to pick my brains
An in person afternoon of shooting in Canterbury
An online critique of your photos after your film is developed
A roll of film included
How the Afternoon Works
We’ll start with a coffee so I can get a feel for your experience level, what you’re hoping to improve, and what kit you’re working with. You can bring any questions you’ve got, and we’ll use that to guide the session.
Then we’ll head out and shoot together. I’ll talk you through what I’m thinking as we go, what I’m looking for, how I’m metering, and how I’m making decisions in real time.
Ideally you’ll bring your own film camera, but if you don’t have one yet, or you fancy trying something different, you can use one of mine.
What You’ll Need to Cover Separately
Travel to Canterbury
Film developing costs for the rolls you shoot
If you want to shoot more than the included roll, feel free to bring extra film, those 36 frames go fast
If you’re not sure where to send your film, I’ll point you towards good labs and help you choose what makes sense for your workflow.
The Online Critique
Once your film is developed and you’ve got the scans back, we’ll book an online session and go through your images together. We’ll look at what’s working, what you’re drawn to, and what you can build on. If anything didn’t come out how you hoped, we’ll troubleshoot it properly, exposure, metering, focus, lab choices, scanning, and I’ll give you clear next steps so you know exactly what to work on next time.
